Arts and Outdoor Weekend Getaway in the San Juan Islands
The San Juan Islands are glorious in summer, featuring amethyst lavender fields, green deciduous trees and impossibly sapphire-blue waters. Festivals include June's San Juan Island Artists' Studio Tour and the Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival. You'll find increased ferry sailings (not all inter-island ferry trips return to the mainland; check schedules carefully).
The "shoulder" seasons of spring and fall offer less expensive lodging — and more options, as the international crowds slow. Spring may be rainier, but you'll see more flowers. Fall generally offers drier weather than spring or winter, and a changing autumn slideshow in the trees.
Winter is quiet — stores have shorter hours (and some may even close for a few weeks), but offer a romantic way to enjoy winter storms pacing across the Puget Sound. At times, however, ferry service is disrupted due to weather conditions and seasonal demand.
