Jacksonville was settled along both sides of the twisting St. Johns River, and a number of attractions are on or near its banks. Both sides of the river, which is spanned by myriad bridges, have downtown areas and waterfront complexes of shops, restaurants, parks, and museums.
You can reach some attractions by water taxi or Skyway Express monorail system—scenic alternatives to driving back and forth across the bridges. That said, a car is generally necessary.
In addition to the visitor information center at the airport, there's one at the Jacksonville Landing marketplace and another in Jacksonville Beach at the Beaches Historical Museum (425 Beach Boulevard), open Tuesday through Saturday 10–4:30.
