If you are going to visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, and we highly recommend that you do, stay the night in Volcano Village. This allows you to see the glow of Halemaumau Crater at night—if there’s activity, that is—without worrying about driving an hour or more back to your condo, hotel, or bed-and-breakfast. There are plenty of places to stay in the area, and many of them are both charming and reasonable. Volcano Village has just enough dining and shopping options to satisfy you for a day or two, and you're also close to Hilo, the Puna region, and Punaluu Black Sand Beach, should you decide to make Volcano your home base for longer.
