There are no resorts in this area, but there are plenty of fantastic bed-and-breakfasts and vacation rental homes at Kealakekua Bay and in the hills above. The towns of Captain Cook and Kainaliu feature some excellent dining and shopping options, and there are several coffee farms open for tours as well. You can get to the volcano in about an hour and a half, and you’re also close to several less well-known but wonderful beaches, including Hookena and Honomolino. Kailua-Kona is a 30-minute drive away from Captain Cook, while the great, sandy beaches of the Kohala Coast are an hour or more away.
