There are no resorts in this area, but there are plenty of fantastic bed-and-breakfasts and vacation rental homes at Kealakekua Bay and in the hills above. The towns of Captain Cook and Kainaliu feature some excellent dining and shopping options, and there are several coffee farms open for tours as well. You can get to the volcano in about an hour and a half, and you’re also close to several less well-known but wonderful beaches, including Hookena and Honomolino. Kailua-Kona is a 30-minute drive away from Captain Cook, while the great, sandy beaches of the Kohala Coast are an hour or more away.

South Point Banyan Tree House
South Kona Studio
This little studio is a great find for travelers on a budget. Not only does it offer a kitchen and private barbecue area, but it's just up the hill from a secluded beach with great snorkeling.
A mile from the entrance of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, this lodge was initially built as a YMCA camp in the 1930s; now it is a pleasant inn, tastefully furnished with European antiques, photographs and authentic Hawaiian quilts. All rooms have a gas fireplace, including a charming one-bedroom cottage on the property, perfect for romance. Cottages off the main property include Pii Mauna House, on the fairway of the Volcano Golf Course. Rates include a full hot breakfast at the lodge's restaurant (open to the public), which has an excellent, gourmet dinner menu that includes braised rabbit and leg of antelope. The duck à l'orange is a customer favorite.
South Point Banyan Tree House
Ideal for romance, this charming little tree cottage is built into a Chinese banyan tree. The partially transparent roof is the world's greatest skylight, letting in lots of light and offering views of the beautiful tree canopy above or the full moon. A wraparound deck with a hot tub provides one of the best places on the island to watch the sunset. It's close to Green Sands Beach and Punaluu Black Sand Beach, and 38 miles from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
