Capri is well connected with the mainland in all seasons, though there are more sailings between April and October. However, you can't return to Naples after the last sailing (11 pm in high season, often 8 pm or even earlier in low season). Hydrofoils, Seacats, and similar vessels leave from Molo Beverello (below Piazza Municipio) in Naples, while far less frequent car ferries leave from Calata Porta di Massa, 1,000 yards to the east. There's also service to and from Sorrento's Marina Piccola. Much of Capri is pedestrianized, and a car is a great hindrance, not a help.

Several ferry and hydrofoil companies ply the waters of the Bay of Naples, making frequent trips to Capri. Schedules change from season to season; the most reliable source for departure times is Il Mattino, Naples's daily newspaper. There's little to be gained—sometimes nothing—from buying a round-trip ticket, which will just tie you down to the return schedule of one line. Book in advance in spring and summer for a Sunday return to the mainland.

Most of Capri's sights are reasonably accessible by either boat or bus, except for Villa Jovis and Cetrella, which require some walking (about 40 minutes). The bus service is relatively cheap (€1.80) and frequent, while taxis are likely to cost 10 to 20 times as much as public transport. Don't buy a biglietto giornaliero (day pass) for the bus and funicular unless you're thinking of covering almost every corner of the island—it costs €9.60, so you would need to make six separate trips to make it pay, and locals deem it a bit of a rip-off.
