Culturally speaking, Capri has a fairly long hibernation, awakening briefly for the New Year celebrations. Recitals and other low-key cultural events are held in October and January in the Centro Caprense Ignazio Cerio, though from June through September the island comes alive with various events, including an outdoor concert season. It's a magical experience to see works performed at Anacapri's Villa San Michele (on Friday evenings) or on the spectacular terrace of the Hotel Caesar Augustus. In general, for information about cultural events and art exhibitions, ask at the local tourist information office or scan the posters in shop windows.

The Certosa di San Giacomo is the cultural heart of the island, hosting events throughout the year. Concerts are held in the two attractive cloisters from June through September. July sees the Certosa International Arts Festival, hosting film screenings, recitals, and readings while the New Year's Eve festivities are eclipsed by the film festival Capri Hollywood (

Capri also caters to the literati, with Le Conversazioni ( presenting well-known authors reading from their works in Piazzetta di Tragara. Held at the beginning of July, previous editions have featured David Byrne, Martin Amis, and Ethan Coen.
