Lesvos and Chios are large, so a car can be useful on either island. You might also want to rent a car on Samos, where mountain roads are steep; motorbikes are a popular mode of transport along the coast. Expect to spend about €35 to €80 per day for a compact car with insurance and unlimited mileage. An international driving permit (available at your local AAA office) is required to rent a car in Greece, and this rule is strictly enforced on Chios; although some agencies on other islands may allow you to rent with your national license, if you are stopped by the police or get into an accident and cannot produce an international or EU license, you might have problems. Budget, at Lesvos Airport, has newer cars and is cheaper than other agencies. Vassilakis on Chios has reliable, well-priced vehicles. Aramis Rent-a-Car, part of Sixt, has fair rates and reliable service on Samos.
