This "Old Market" Square is the hub of Potsdam's historical center and was, for three centuries, home to the city's baroque palace. The area was heavily damaged by Allied bombing in World War II and then destroyed by the East German regime in 1960. After reunification, Potsdam decided to rebuild its palace, and the reconstructed structure will house the state parliament. Thanks to private donors, the first element, a magnificent replica of the Fortunaportal, now stands proudly on the square, while the palace's main sections are currently being built with a combination of modern and historic elements.
