Good restaurants dot the region, thanks to a steady flow of fine chefs seeking to cater to wealthy locals and waves of demanding visitors. The country's food revolution is in full evidence here. Restaurants have never had a problem with a fresh food supply: excellent regional produce, salmon from the rivers Severn and Wye, local lamb and pork, venison from the Forest of Dean, and pheasant, partridge, quail, and grouse in season. Also look for Gloucestershire Old Spot pork, bacon (try a delicious Old Spot bacon sandwich), and sausage on area menus.

This pub, traditional on the outside, comfortably comtemporary and stylish on the inside, offers a snug coffee lounge and adjoining restaurant, which specializes in Modern British fare. On the menu you might see such light dishes as smoked Bibury trout, cured salmon with pink grapefruit, or twiced-baked Cheddar soufflé. The courtyard garden makes an ideal spot for an elderfower and mint cocktail and alfresco dining. The inn also offers 13 stylish, uncluttered bedrooms and a spa.
With views of the church of St. Mary's, this pub dating from 1554 offers a reassuringly traditional and charming milieu for food and refreshment. Light meals are available at lunchtime, teas in the afternoon, and for the evening meal you might start with scallops on pea and lentil purée, then try the trio of lamb with a tomato, olive, and rosemary jus for your main course. The clotted cream rice pudding makes an indulgent end to the meal. The inn's grounds hold what is claimed to be the world's oldest bowling green. There are 11 well-furnished bedrooms upstairs.

The energy and buzz of this plate-glass and chrome eatery, situated right by the Cornhall in the center of town, will set you up as much as the coffee and pastry, afternoon tea and a bun, or a soup and focaccia lunch. You can always pick something up from the delicatessen for a picnic if you prefer.
