Mexico's Caribbean coastline can be divided into two sections: developed coast and wild coast. The northern stretch from Punta Tanchacté to Punta Allen—the Riviera Maya—has the most sights and accommodations, and includes some of the Yucatán's most beautiful ruins and cenotes. The southern stretch, between Punta Allen and Chetumal, is where civilization thins out. Here in the "Costa Maya" you'll find the most alluring landscapes, including the pristine jungle wilderness of the Reserva de la Biosfera Sian Ka'an.Wildlife has been affected by the development of coastal resorts. Thanks to the federal government's foresight, however, 1.6 million acres of coastline and jungle have been set aside for protection as the Reserva de la Biosfera Sian Ka'an. Whatever may happen elsewhere along the coast, this preserve is a haven for the wildlife and the travelers who seek the Yucatán of old.
